Bridge of Hope Center Orphanage:
It is with great pleasure that I am finally able to officially introduce you
to the Bridge of Hope Center, the newest orphanage to be sponsored by Hearth to
Hearth Ministries. Actually, we have been working with Pastor Mukhooli and
Bridge of Hope Center for the past two years behind the scenes. The main reason why we did
not give our official recognition to
this orphanage earlier is because of the lack of funds to nurture it. When we
began working with our Uganda projects at the beginning of 2005, it was with the
understanding that we would send them whatever we could raise for their work,
but that the needs of the two orphanages we were already working with in Kenya
would come first. We realized that to make this orphanage official was to make a
commitment we did not feel prepared to make. Then, just about the time we
planned to “take the plunge,” we acquired thirty- one extra children from the
Kenyan government, plus many extras at Glory Children's Center orphanage, and you know the
rest of that story! (Over
crowded Orphanages. Read about the Kenyan projects) Needless to say, the work in
Uganda has been progressing under great difficulties. Pastors Mukhooli and
Musungu are to be commended for the efforts they have put forth under very
difficult and trying circumstances.
The situation with finances has not changed very much in this
ministry in the past few months. We still have very
many unsponsored children to support, an arrearage in school fees for both Hope
for Children
Center and Glory Children's Center orphanages, the need for two orphanages to be built, as
well as numerous other needs, but it seemed unfair to ask Bridge of Hope Center
orphanage to continue waiting while we forge ahead with the Good Samaritan Home
orphanage—a truly much
newer project. Therefore, our Board has voted to take this overdue step solely
by faith, with the understanding that we are now in a position, largely through
our website, to publicize the needs of all of our projects in a more
satisfactory manner, and that God is in control. He has never failed!
My grandson, Logan Harvey, has just spent a month at Bridge
of Hope Center orphanage and he has sent the following report:
Bridge of Hope Center orphanage. The home they are staying in is very comfortable, even though they are in
need of many things. I am very impressed with how Pastor Mukhooli and his wife
run this home and the widows’ project. As they are doing this pretty much alone,
they are quite busy. Pastor has a secretary to help with the paperwork and to
keep the files of records. Unfortunately, the secretary’s wife is sick, so he
has been unable to help put together the information we have gathered since I’ve
been here. They have no maid to help the Pastor’s wife with the housework, but
the older children help with that. But when they are at school, I’m sure she
could use some hired help.
“They live near Mbale town in sort of a suburb. They have a
large fenced-in yard for the children to play in. The home is quite large to
African standards and is built much like American homes. They have running water
and electricity. Unfortunately, the electricity is on and off and is not very
reliable. They have three bedrooms, a living room, dining room, bathroom and
garage. The kitchen is tiny, so they cook outside with charcoal burners. They
are hoping to build a small tin kitchen outside so they can cook with wood,
which is much cheaper than charcoal. They usually cook porridge for breakfast, and the other two meals consist rice
and beans, as well as potatoes and cabbage. They have this every day, but
they don’t seem to mind. Because of a limited budget, they are unable to afford
raw vegetables or fruits very often.
“The girls sleep in one room, the boys occupy another room,
as well as the garage, and Pastor Mukhooli and his wife have the third bedroom.
The children’s rooms are quite crowded because they only have a few beds and
most of them sleep on mattresses on the floor. They really need bunk beds, not
only for space but also so they can hang their mosquito
nets. They can’t hang them over the whole room, and mosquitoes are a big problem
here. Many of the children have suffered from malaria since I’ve been here.
“The dining room is small and they have a small table for the
adults. Pastor is hoping to buy a table big enough so they
can all eat together. The children now eat in the living room. They have two
couches and enough chairs for all the children to sit for meals or worship.
“They also have two rooms they use for storing food and charcoal. The bathroom
has a toilet and a stall for bathing. They also have a latrine outside for the
children because most of them don’t know how to use a toilet...
“Even though they are in need of many things, they are doing
a wonderful job with this project. We are helping so
many people here and I’m glad that Hearth to Hearth Ministries stepped out in
faith to go on with this project. Please keep Pastor Mukhooli, his family,
and the widows and children in this project in your prayers. God is doing a
wonderful thing here in Uganda and I feel honored to be a part of this ministry
and to see God working here. God bless all of you in America who are keeping
this project going with your time, prayers, and financial support.
“Sincerely,
Logan Harvey”
Logan has just about said it all, hasn’t he! His labor of love in
Africa has been such a blessing to this ministry, both here and over there.
We are blessed to have many volunteers, some unknown to us, who are out there
spreading the word about our work for these orphans. From the bottoms of our
hearts, we thank you. Let’s work together to give Bridge of Hope Center
orphanage a chance. Let's build orphanages
