FCDUganda
           Foundation for Community Development (FCD)

Mission: Improving the socio-economic life status and standard of living of the under serviced communities in Uganda.

Welcome to the home of FCDUganda a local non governmental organization in Uganda.

FCDUganda was founded in 2004 by Kintu Abraham Robert, with the goal of bringing opportunities for economic and social change to the local communities in Uganda. The organization is in a small, one room office in rural Namakwekwe Ward, Kiteso Village, about 2 kilometers from Mbale town.

Kintu Abraham Robert started this organization after completion of his diploma in public administration in 2002 and spending a lot of time on streets looking for jobs here and there, facing a lot of interview panels but not offered a job after even excelling in the interviews. Therefore this gave the birth of this innovation of the demand driven organization to serve the underserved members of the community to fight HIV/AIDS and Poverty which has affected the development in the Ugandan’s communities.

Foundation for Community Development
As HIV/AIDS continue to ravage Ugandan communities, the number of vulnerable children and needy continues to increase. HIV/AIDS not only kill society’s traditional care givers but also drive those who remain deeper into a vicious cycle of poverty and dependence. It destroys not only the economic foundations of families, but society’s social and psychological fabric.

Vulnerable Children in the community.

Foundation for Community Development
As women are more likely to take responsibility for vulnerable children.
In the community, the economic burden on female care givers is the most extreme. In Uganda the number of vulnerable children and widows living in female headed house holders over the two thirds 2/3 of such house-hold in some district of Uganda living on less than a day.
In rural Uganda 25% of house holds are headed by women who have less land and fever assets, resources, and productive members than house holds headed by men.

FCDUganda projects

 A. PUBLIC HEALTH ANDHIV/AIDS CONTROL PROGRAM:
About HIV/AIDS, as well known Africa is the most hit by the scourge of the most dangerous disease which has left a lot of people affected and infected with the disease among the communities. As one of FCD-Uganda’s roles is to confront this problem by using all the possible means to make sure the reduce the spread of the disease and make sure the window of hope is safe, we have therefore handled it in the following ways:

  • Sensitization through music dance and drama
  • Carrying out village and school seminars
  • Support those affected by the disease like supporting school going children with scholastic materials so that they can have a bright future.
  • Counsel those infected so that they can live positively and plan for their future. We send out counselors to make home visits to the clients to ensure they  don’t feel abandoned and lonely
  • We also fight stigma among the people in the community i.e. people should understand that having HIV is not a crime, even those with HIV can stay with others i.e. they should not be abandoned.

B. SMALL LOAN SCHEME AND AFRICAN POULTRY KEEPING:
Sensitizing the youth, woman and vulnerable children on how to be productive through small loan scheme and African poultry keeping in order to saving them from a virus cycle of poverty in the societies.

C. ORPHANAGE:
FCDUganda we have tried to save orphans from streets, Drug attendant and sexuality which lead them to many problems, We help them by giving out materials like Books, Feeding and clothes.

CHALLENGES

  • Limited finances: the income of the organization is still small which limits the organization on extending its services and it also limits implementation of some projects.
  • Ignorance: most people are illiterates which makes it difficult to combat poverty in a way that even if one started a small income generating he/she can not sustain it because there will be difficult to make accountability. And yet if one had some skill, could be either employed to earn a living or start up income generating activities and sustain them.

  • Culture: this is a challenge in a way that most communities believe that girls are not supposed to go to school to attain knowledge. It therefore becomes difficult to fight poverty if the wife in the family is not educated; she has no any source of income which makes a wife so dependant and therefore when the husband dies the wife can’t support the family. This makes children get involved into child labor, prostitution in order to earn a living thus the increased spread of HIV/AIDS.

  • Limited material resources: when you look at the vocational skills program, one tool is used by 8 students which ratio is so high and therefore makes practical skill administering to a student very difficult.
  • Transport: this is a big challenge in the organization to running FCDUganda services in the communities. This has reduced the pace at which FCDUganda does its outreaches and postponement on the commencement of some projects.

RECOMMENDATIONS
A lot of support is still needed in all areas to enable us execute our services promptly:

  • Volunteers: if you can help us identify volunteers who can come and work with us, this will boost our manpower
  • Finances: if you can help us identify potential funders (donors) to support some of our programs this will help us implement some of the projects that have not implemented and also extend our services to the areas that we have not reached.

  • Materials: you do not necessarily need to donate money but if we can get those tools in the departments we have we can receive them and be able to utilize them and this way we shall reduce student tool ratio.

LONG-TERM GOALS

To spread development consciousness in order to fight poverty and empowering underserved communities to be self reliant.

To increase awareness of the plight of the unemployed, Needy, idle, less privileged people.

Providing a link through which all people regardless of Race, Religion or Tribe can work together through ideas and practical assistance with focus on socio-economic development.

Promoting girl’s literacy levels by sensitizing and re-enforcing communities through appropriate means in order to accelerate progress for girls and women towards a brighter future in Uganda.

To promote development of healthy and responsible society where youth and children have the possibility to make decisions concerning their sexuality that are not associated with demands or fear.

Developing a long term capacity for FCDUganda to support itself economically and doing lawful activities as are conducive to the achievement of the aforementioned objectives.
