Hope for Children Center Orphanage has over 230 orphans.
Surely the orphans at Hope Center are grateful for having a home and joyously
work to keep this huge family running smoothly. We recently heard from
Pastor Maurice that he has the older children on a “kitchen” assignment duty
rotation, alternating between the older boys and girls. “We have a work program
for the children and they love it. From January to April it is boys who work in
the kitchen. They love it and that is when I also work there. We cook and help where necessary. Then from May to August
it is time for girls. Brian and Logan came when it was time for girls. From
November to December, girls and boys do it together in the kitchen. It is the
children themselves who suggested this routine and they just love it.”
And to answer the many who ask, “How do they take care of so
many children with such a small staff?” Pastor Maurice shared this: “We have big
girls taking care of the younger girls because they sleep together in the same
dormitory. Also, the big boys take care of the younger ones because they live in
the same dormitory. They love it.
They wash them, wash their clothing, shine their shoes and iron
their clothing. Also, they care for their beddings. They like it.” Surely
this big family exemplifies what God expects of us, working together to care for
those who cannot do for themselves.
It was Richard Whately who said, “A man who gives his children
habits of industry provides for them better than by giving them a fortune.”
Pastor Maurice is a good father to these children, helping them to develop
habits of industry. I believe he would heartily agree with Richard Whately.Pastor Maurice has been planning ahead for another famine while
the prices of grains and beans are low during harvest. While much grain
was grown at the orphanage, it is not enough to met the demand. Therefore,
he has requested funds to purchase two hundred bags of maize and eighty bags of
beans to store for our children at Hope Center.A few weeks ago the Senior Church School class at Lake Ann
started a famine fund for just this purpose, collecting funds each week. This
would be a good project for other Church School classes as well. A few dollars a
week from several sources can make a real difference in lives saved should the
expected famine occur again in February. Though a dollar does not seem like much
in our experience, it can feed a child for two days in Kenya.
May God continue to bless these children as we work together to
plan for the “winter” which will surely follow.
